To reduce delivery times, the group builds a wide variety of
standard vessels on its own account and keeps them in stock in
readiness for when the orders come in. However, Damen also retains
the ability to start from scratch to design and build unique dedicated
vessels. The Damen Services division prides itself in providing a
comprehensive range of maritime services to its clients.
With over 120 vessels delivered a year worldwide, just a brief
look at the recent output of Damen's yards in the Netherlands is
enough to show the sheer scale of the group's operations.
The Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding subsidiary, on September
10 completed delivery of 'Tarik Ben Ziyad', the first of three
Sigma-class frigates being constructed at its shipyard in Vlissingen
for the Royal Moroccan Navy. Meanwhile, sea acceptance trials
began in August for 'Zeeland', the second of four Holland-class
ocean-going patrol vessels for the RNLN, also built at Vlissingen. The
yard will also shortly undertake final systems outfitting,
commissioning and testing of 'Karel Doorman' -- currently under
construction at Damen Shipyard Galatz in Romania.
Also based at Vlissingen, the yacht-building subsidiary Amels
joined the Damen group in 1991. Amels' covered drydocks and
work bays can support six yachts in various production stages.
Earlier this year it delivered the 54.3-metre 'Ariela' and 65.5
metre 'Imagine', both from the company's Limited Editions
yacht range. Amels is running at full capacity with eight projects
Further up the Dutch coast, Damen Shipyards Bergum is
specialised in vessels such as short sea cargo vessels, oil tankers,
large tugs and offshore vessels. In September the yard completed
the 3,800DWT bulker 'Calypso' for Alecto Chartering and Trading.
Towards the other end of the scale, Damen Shipyards
Gorinchem recently delivered the 26-metre 'Marineco Shamal' to
Marineco UK, based in Edinburgh, Scotland. 'Marineco Shamal' is
the first of Damen's new 2610 line of high-speed offshore support
vessels for the offshore wind sector. The 2610 was developed after
Damen surveyed several offshore wind contractors and suppliers,
and identified a demand for a twin-axe bowed catamaran that
offered high speed, workability in rough seas, safe personnel
transfer, a large working deck and a diving platform.
Damen's solution seems to have been a success. The group is
currently building 15 more of the boats for clients in several
industries, including Marineco, who will take delivery of 'Marineco
Mariah' next February.
Last month 'Marineco Shamal' was put to work on the
Sheringham Shoal Wind Farm in severe weather conditions, going
out to sea while the storm kept the other offshore support vessels
in port. The vessel successfully transferred maintenance personnel
to a wind turbine amid waves 1.9 metres high.
"Every time she excels in the field everyone in the wind farm
industry knows about it before we do," said Mike Conafray of
Marineco, joining a long list of satisfied Damen customers.
