Home' Baird Maritime : September 2011 Contents China's AVIC Weihai Shipyard has
launched and delivered the 30,000DWT
bulk carrier 'Yulia' for German owner
Built to a design from Shanghai's Ship
Design and Research Institute (SDARI),
the 185-metre long all-steel vessel has a
depth to main deck of 14.6 metres, a
design draught of 10.4 metres and a
measured tonnage of 19,637GRT.
Designed and built to Germanischer
Lloyd classification society requirements,
'Yulia' will fly the Cypriot flag and is
registered in the port of Monrovia.
The bulbous bow hull design features six
separate cargo holds with a total volume of
38,500 cubic metres. Cargo is handled by
three electro-hydraulic deck cranes, each
with a lifting capacity of 30 tonnes SWL at
an outreach of 22 metres.
The vessel's engine room is equipped
with a single MAN B&W 6S46MC-C main
engine with an output of 7,860kW at
129rpm. Driving through to a four-bladed
fixed-pitch propeller, the unit provides the
vessel with a cruising speed of 14 knots.
Electrical power is provided by a bank of
three Daihatshu generators, each
outputting 680kW at 720rpm.
Operating with a crew of 25, 'Yulia'
will join a fleet of more than 40 cargo
vessels currently operated by MST
Shipping. The shipping company, which
specialises in Atlantic dry bulk operations,
transports more than six million tonnes
of cargo annually.
Capable of building and repairing ships of
up to 100,000DWT, AVIC Weihai Shipyard
has constructed more than 300 vessels over
the course of its 60-year history. The
implementation of a modernisation program
throughout the 1990s saw the yard's focus
shift from primarily domestic customers to
overseas orders and, since 1996, the
company has successfully exported more
than 40 vessels to owners from Europe,
North America and other parts of Asia.
Concentrating primarily on the construction
of medium-to-large size cargo vessels, the
yard's output includes bulk carriers,
container ships and general cargo ships.
