Jianglong Shipbuilding Co. is one of
China's leading builders of FRP vessels.
The shipyard, which can also build in
steel and aluminium, specialises in the
construction of small to medium sized
commercial vessels and motor yachts. Its
output includes a variety of patrol vessels,
firefighting vessels, luxury yachts and
semi-submersibles, with its "bread and
butter" being a series of fast ferries
and sightseeing/tourist vessels of both
monohull and catamaran configuration.
Established in 1998, the company
initially focused exclusively on the
domestic market but, in recent years, has
expanded its horizons with a number
of vessels being built for export. The
latest example of this being the 'EcoCat
Express', shown here, which has
been built for service out of Port La
Guaira in Venezuela.
This modern FRP catamaran passenger
ferry was built to meet China Classification
Society regulations and has an overall
length of 21.6 metres, a beam of 5.5 metres
and a depth to main deck of 2.18 metres.
Overall displacement is just over 44 tonnes
The design features a single enclosed
passenger deck topped by the vessel's
compact wheelhouse ahead of an open
seating area on the upper deck. In total up to
80 passengers can be transported -- serviced
by a crew of five -- with individual airline
style reclining seating provided arranged in
rows of two by four around narrow tables.
The passengers are kept entertained and
informed via a Bosch audio-visual system.
Twin WCs are provided aft with a small
bar area fitted in the bow to starboard
providing refreshments. External stairwells
incorporated into the front end of the
superstructure lead up to the upper deck,
which makes for an excellent viewing
platform of the passing scenery and wildlife
in fine weather.
The simple wheelhouse provides a fine
command vantage point and is outfitted
for one-man operations. A basic electronics
package is fitted to provide for safe coastal
navigation, and includes a Raymarine
radar and plotter, Furuno sounder and
Each of the catamaran's hulls contains a
367kW output Weichai WP12C500
propulsion engine that drives through to a
propeller via an Advance HCQ300 gearbox.
This economical drive train configuration
provides for a maximum speed of 22 knots,
and a full-load cruising speed that is only
slightly less at 21 knots.
Practical, economical and efficient,
'EcoCat Express' is a fine example of a
small, modern catamaran passenger ferry.
With the quality of build and production
ever increasing, it seems inevitable that an
increasing number of the world's workboats
will be coming out of the yards of Chinese
builders like Zhuhai Jianglong Shipbuilding
Co. and her contemporaries.
